Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As an SLP, I have the pleasure of working with numerous students from diverse backgrounds. I work with students in small groups or one-on one in either a pull out or inclusion manner to increase communication skills. Delays in communication skills impact every area in our lives.
Many of the students I work with are on the Autism spectrum.
Some of these students are non-verbal and require alternative forms of communication to help express their wants and needs. Many of these students are from low-income families, and do not have access to computers or any type of technology in the home. You can only imagine the frustration these students feel every day as they struggle to share their thoughts. My students have been using the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) to communicate. This system is very limited because if the picture symbol is not present, they are unable to use it to communicate. Picture symbols are also not as motivating to our students who already lack the motivation to communicate. Technology is everywhere in our society and is extremely motivating to our students. My students would benefit greatly from using an iPad device with the TouchChat app on it. This app is designed to help students who are unable to use their own voice.
My Project
I am requesting 4 iPad minis each with the touch talk application, 4 protective cases, and 1 charging station with charging cords. Students would use these devices during speech sessions and in their classroom to help build functional communication skills. The devices would allow them to make requests for basic wants and needs, answer questions, and use to communicate for social gains. As a Technology school, we pride ourselves on using technology to help our students learn every day. My students should be able to use technology to communicate as well.
Communication skills are invaluable to have.
They are used every day for a variety of functions. These devices with a communication app will give my students access to thousands of picture prompts at the touch of a button in a highly motivating manner. With your help, I can give help teach them how to communicate functionally.
