Helping Ballerinas-in-Training

My Students

Whenever you turn on the TV, it seems like the whole world has gone dance crazy. So You Think You Can Dance and Dance Mom (just to name a few) are taking over and making dance very popular again. However, for my primary girls, being a dancer is just a dream. I want to make it a reality for them!

I work in a low-income school (98%) school on the southeast side of Chicago.

I currently have 30 kindergarteners in my class. Our school has three Pre-K classrooms (one blended half-day and two full day) and two Kindergarten classrooms. My school is located in a not-so-safe neighborhood so we keep our school open late so students can have a safe environment.

My Project

These students are very active and want to be involved in after-school sports. However, my school only caters to the older students when it comes to after-school activities. Our primary students are not able to participate in the sports teams such as double-dutch, basketball and cross country. I am tired of having my little ones coming to me wanting to be involved in their school and me having to tell them they are just too young. Well that ends today! I decided to form a dance team for my primary girls called Tiny Gems. With the help of another teacher, we will teach 32 Pre-K-K girls ballet and have them perform at dance recitals and school assemblies. The only thing that is stopping us is my parents are not able to afford the ballet uniforms for their children. I have had parents say to me they want their daughter to participate but don't have the money to give for them to dance. I want my girls to do something that will not only exercise their bodies but also exercise their minds.

With the funding for this project, my primary girls will be able to become true ballet dancers by knowing their moves and dressing just like one.

Not only will it help them learn about dance, but it will give them a reason to be proud of themselves. This proud behavior will also carry into the classroom where they will be exceptional students. So will you please help my Tiny Gems look their best when they are ready to perform for the world?
