My students need hands-on math materials including flip books, problem solving journals, fraction tiles, and write-and-wipe graphing boards and number lines.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I want to help all of my students develop a love for mathematics!
I am a third grade teacher at a Title I elementary school in Mississippi.
Due to the financial crisis that our state is facing, we have received several budget cuts. My students are excited about learning. I feel that it is my job, as their teacher, to make sure that they stay excited about learning, regardless of our setbacks.
My Project
Although my male students enjoy mathematics, I must admit that my female students are not showing the same interest. Most of the girls complete the math lessons because it is a requirement. Whereas, the boys will take an active role in the lessons (asking questions, explaining their thinking, etc..) the girls do not show the same self-confidence. Many of the girls feel that they simply are not good in math. I am concerned because as a teacher, I realize that research states that girls are more likely than boys to opt out of advanced math classes. As a result, girls are limited in both their college major and career choices. I would like to solve this problem by providing my students with hands-on math materials including, division array flip books, Common Core problem solving journals, hand-on fraction tiles, a self check time match-up game, and write and wipe graphing boards. These resources will allow me to plan fun activities that will allow my students to enjoy our math lessons.
By funding our project, you will make it possible for my female students to improve their attitudes about mathematics by getting some much needed practice.
I feel that the girls will build their confidence and esteem as they learning to enjoy math. Please help us succeed at learning.
