This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My ESE students are amazing! They want to learn everything that I teach them and more. These learners' brains are different, so they need enticing materials that address their special needs. Most of them have been retained at least once My third grade students are repeating third grade for a second time. Sometimes, this is their second time repeating a grade, and my goal is to help them grow by leaps and bounds. Often, these kids have learning disabilities that are not yet identified. Reading is their primary struggle because they haven't yet had explicit, systematic sensory instruction. IMSE OG+ or Institute of Multi-sensory Education Orton-Gillingham lessons offer students a way to learn that their brains respond well to.

Here are a couple of examples:

1) When learning a new phonics concept, students draw the letter/s that make the sound in multi-color sand which sits in a plastic tray. While the teacher runs through a drill, the students respond by identifying the letter/s, drawing it/them, and reciting both its/their name and sound or sounds.

2) Another approach uses a red word book. Red words are irregular or difficult to spell words that break the usual rules. Using red crayons, a plastic mesh grid, and a red word booklet, students go through a routine of writing these words. The routine includes writing the word multiple times over mesh, tracing the bumpy letters, repeating the spelling, tapping it on their arm, and writing a sentence with the words.

Always guided by the teacher, kids build confidence! Multi-sensory learning-touch, auditory, visual- promotes individualized teaching, focuses on phonics, offers structured learning, provides remediation and intervention, and is backed by research. By implementing these approaches and providing necessary supplies, we can empower students with disabilities to become better, proficient readers.
