My Students

"The best way to think of ADD is not as a mental disorder but as a collection of traits and tendencies that define a way of being in the world." (Edward M. Hallowell) As a teacher with ADD, I understand the distractions, constant movements, and overwhelming thoughts some of my students face daily.

I have several students that have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD.

Our school is predominantly low income and the students have minimal background experiences and positive support systems in place. Often students with ADD/ADHD are considered behavior problems. Because I experience ADD personally, I know many of the tendencies and how they effect work habits, behavior and even attitudes. These students deserve a positive learning environment, need to be provided with ways to move without distracting others and given new opportunities for success in the classroom.

My Project

I try to find new ways to make learning easier for them. I offer alternative seating such as stools, bean bags, pillows, lap boards, exercise balls and more. I am upfront with the parents about my own ADD. That opens the door for communication, questions and concerns and a better understanding about ADD/ADHD. Parents seem more willing to discuss options and see the possible opportunities for helping their child. This grant will help me offer Hokki stools and Disc O Sit as additional seating options that move with the ADD child so they are less distracting to those around them and so they can focus more on the task at hand. The other materials will encourage improved handwriting, help with learning facts, vocabulary and other important information. The teacher guide will provide me with various new activities to try in the classroom.

Will Smith said, "If you are not making someone else's life better then you are wasting your time.

Your life will become better by making others lives better." My goal as a teacher is to provide my students with the best possible learning environment. With this grant you will be helping me help my students who deal with ADD/ADHD. That will make your life better, my life better and more importantly, the lives of my students better.
