Helpful Materials to Guide our Reading

My students need engaging guided reading materials such as Reading Trackers, Word Work Folder Game Library and Vocabulary Folder Games Library that will help develop their needs as beginning and intermediate readers.

My Students

My students are desperate for an engaging guided reading program to help them learn to read fluently. Luckily, our school has many guided reading books for small group use, but we are lacking in other vital materials needed for complete literacy development.

Our school is located right in the middle of a less than safe neighborhood where many of the students walk to school.

Many of my students live with a single parent or grandparents and move often from apartment to apartment. Poverty is a huge factor at our school and many of our students receive free and reduced lunches and have only a few uniforms to last them the entire school year. I know with a great education these children will be able to rise above their circumstances and prevail. My second grade students are extremely diverse. They are comprised of gifted education students, retained students, English language learners, and many Early Intervention Program students. To meet all of their needs everyday they need materials that are not only educational and rigorous, but also engaging and fun. Past second grade, students are no longer learning to read, but rather reading to learn. This year is their last chance to learn to read, but they need some help from you!

My Project

My students will participate in small group, guided reading daily. Students will be hooked into a lesson by having key words and skills for the lesson listed on the tabletop easel. They will read using the highlighting markers that help them keep track words. Struggling readers will practice daily word work using sight word recognition and games, while higher leveled readers will build upon their vocabulary skills. With the materials donated from donors choose paired with the existing leveled readers our school currently has, my students will have a complete literacy program. I envision my struggling readers making great gains and my higher readers continuing to grow in their love for reading.

Donations to this project will greatly improve my classroom's guided reading experience and my students ability to make the gains necessary to be successful in second grade and beyond.

With your help, my students can build an understanding and love for reading which will effect them for the rest of their educational career. This is the time for my students to build a strong reading foundation and guided reading is the brick and mortar to that foundation.
