Help with Distractable Students!

My students need extra support to stay focused on learning: the chair balls, cushions and weighted vest I am requesting will help address what they need in order to learn!

My Students

Special needs students often have greater challenges in staying focused in order to learn. This can be due to a number of things but today I am asking your help to address their sensory needs.

My students are ages 6-8 and grades 1-3.

Each special-needs student in this class is served by an "IEP," an instructional education plan. In this plan the students needs are detailed, and their goals and successes are written. Every student in my class is capable of learning and each are making great strides in their goals. In order to improve upon their successes I would like your help to increase their attention and focus during instruction time. Research has shown that addressing students' sensory needs can improve their focus. The items I am requesting serve to calm a student's overexcited sensory load. With this addressed they can increase their focus on instruction, learn more quickly and experience less frustration. Learning will feel more fun!

My Project

The strange and wonderful items I am requesting include two ball chairs. How can these help a student focus? We all have the fidgets now and then, but many special needs students have this challenge most of the time, making it difficult to get comfortable enough to calm down and learn. I hope these chairs, rotated between my 8 students, will help them calm and learn. The two chair cushions I have requested serve a similar purpose - sensory feedback while seated actually can enhance a student's attention on the task at hand. Lastly, I have requested a weighted vest. This item can be worn by a student for 10-20 minutes before or during a task. It also has a calming effect. Happily it can be shared among my 8 students as they need it. Our physical and occupational therapists have recommended these type of items for students but their departments do not own them. I would like to have these items for this special needs classroom for this year and for many years to come.

While my students are succeeding in their goal areas I feel we can improve upon their successes by increasing their attention and focus during instruction time.

With use of the sensory support items I have requested the students can increase their focus on instruction, learn more quickly and with less frustration. It is all about keeping learning fun and successful!
