My Students

What kid doesn't play doctor growing up? My students love to play doctor but have a hard time acting out scenarios because they don't have the background knowledge to help them.

My students are some of the strongest and sweetest preschool children I have ever met in my life.

They come from one of the roughest and most violent neighborhoods in Washington, DC. Most of them come from a single parent home but have such a desire to learn. They attend an open space school which means there are no walls or doors to their classroom. Their classroom is divided and separated by cabinets and partitions which allows for easy distractions when they don't have engaging materials.

My Project

These materials will be used to help build our Hospital theme in our new Tools of the Mind curriculum. The books will be used to help build students' background knowledge about the hospital and the roles of people in the hospital. The writing boards will be used to help build vocabulary as well as fine motor and writing skills. And you can't have a hospital with out a doctor's exam kit. The kits will be used to teach students what doctors do in an exam and the tools they use.

With these materials, my preschoolers will have an opportunity to take on role in the hospital we will create in our room.

They will also have materials that will help keep them engaged in their center and ignore the distracts from open space. The materials could also help set them on the path to becoming a doctor or nurse when they grow up.
