Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom would be a picture of "bustling" work. Students are engaged right away. I try to make their learning as relevant and interactive as I possibly can and I live for those "light bulb" moments. No one learns by just sitting and we try to be as "hands on" as possible.
I teach two sections of language arts for third grade.
We are in south Texas at a public elementary school of about 850 students PK-5. We are located in a coastal town, which has chemical plants and fishing industries. We have many migrant families due to lots of agriculture in our area. Over 70% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, so many of them have had no exposure to a variety of life experiences, which would increase their knowledge. Our community includes a diverse group of cultures. We have Burmese refugee children, other Asian children whose parents work at the plants, African American, Hispanic and white students. The students are very eager to learn and, for the most part, the parents want what is best for their child, no matter what. They may have limited income but they still try to help do whatever they can for their children. These students may be low income - but are eager learners who deserve the best education I can give them.
My Project
The literature organizers will be used to sort our work throughout the week - a sort of "portfolio" of our week's work. This will be sent home for parents to view . I believe in the importance of the parent/school connection. The "Close Reading" Center will be used for my struggling readers. While some students seem to have natural abilities to read and understand - or have had experiences in their lives that lend to understanding, others must be taught background knowledge and strategies that will lead to understanding.
I truly believe the addition of these materials to our classroom could make a huge difference in my students' lives.
If we can spend our time interacting and learning, as well as keeping parents informed - the students have a better chance of success. I believe this project will better ensure success for my students. Please help me help my students be successful!
