This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We don't have a place to sit! Due to a bed bug problem last year our rugs had to be taken away. We do most of our work as a class sitting on a rug, but now we are on the cold hard floor. Please help!
I teach second grade.
I teach in a co-taught classroom with both typically developing students and students who have autism. Our school is in NYC and most of our students come from low income households. Our students are very open to diversity. Not only do we have many different nationalities represented in our school, but we also have many students with disabilities. Our students are taught from day one that differences are what make us special and unique.
My Project
Due to that fact that I teach in an early childhood classroom, we try to make our classroom as "homey" as possible. We do a lot of reading and conversations around books. We always do this in a circle around the classroom meeting area. Unfortunately because our rugs were taken away last year because of a bed bug problem, we now have to sit on the cold hard tile floor.
A new rug would allow us to read to our students more often and keep them engaged for a longer period of time. Almost all of our teaching is done in the meeting area, but without a comfy rug, my poor students don't want to sit there and complain about how uncomfortable they are. It is only the 6th day of school and this has already become a distraction for their learning. Please help!
A place to sit is really a basic need.
I want to be able to provide this to my students. So many of my students have to share a bed or do not have a place of their own at home. Please help us give them a home away from home in our classroom.
