My students need books of their interest, in good condition, and part of series so they can improve their literacy skills and work with a book club.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Think about how it feels to open up a good book. The crisp pages, the fresh cover, getting into the exciting plot, falling in love with the characters. Now, think how great it is to read a book with someone else who loves the characters and the story as much as you.
My students come from a neighborhood with great families and great values.
Education is truly important here and the students really do try their hardest and enjoy being at school. However, because of language barriers and poverty levels the children don't always get the resources and support that they really need. Most of my students speak English as a second language. They come from homes where their families work hard, but can't provide everything for them that they need to succeed. For the majority of my students the only access they get to literacy is from my classroom. They rarely buy books on their own, they do not have many books at their homes, and many don't even have library cards. They love reading at school and borrowing books from the school library. Our classroom library, however, is in big trouble. That is the place where reading should be fostered the most and because of its poor condition it can't be.
My Project
The library in my classroom is extremely sparse. The books that are there are extremely old, often times the cover is torn, pages are missing, and the books are being held together by tape. The topics that the books are about are very old fashioned and the students have very little interest in most of the books in our library. The students dread going to the classroom library because there is nothing in it that looks appealing or is at their interest level. The baskets are practically empty, once a few students take books the rest have hardly anything to choose from at all. Furthermore, I would love for some of my students to read the same things. It is an extra passion they can have about books when they can share it with someone else. By having many copies of the same book and books out of the same series I can foster book clubs and partner reading and bring the interest and engagement to a whole new level.
I want my students to love reading, not deal with it because they have to.
I want them to be able to walk to my classroom library and have a hard time choosing books because so many look amazing to them. I don't want them to have a hard time choosing books because there is nothing left in the basket or because they don't want any of the books that are in there. I want them to be able to share with friends over their love for the same characters or stories. Please help make this possible.
