My PreK3 students are some of the most amazing children I have ever met. They live in one of the most dangerous communities in our nation's capital and some have gone through more in their young lives then many of us will every have to endure in a lifetime. Every day they walk down a hill to school where they are able to escape the violence that riddles their neighborhood. Despite all of the challenges they face outside the school walls, they still come to school each day ready and excited to learn.
My 3 year olds thrive on the educational and enrichment opportunities being offered to them which helps them to build their background knowledge and expose them to things they otherwise wouldn't be exposed to.
Many of them would not have any opportunities to build their educational foundations if it wasn't for being enrolled in school.
My Project
In Washington, DC our students attend neighborhood schools which means there is no bus transportation and they walk to school. For our students, that means a minimum of 4 blocks, in many cases more than 6. For anyone who has ever lived in an area where it drops below freezing in the winter, hats and gloves are a necessity whenever you go outside, especially when you're walking. These temperatures are especially brutal for our preschoolers who have to walk in the frigid temperatures to get to school.
During the winter months, my students often miss school because they do not have hats and gloves to keep them warm on their walk to school.
With these hats, gloves, and scarf sets, my students will have the necessary winter garments to keep them warm. Each year we have students who either miss school or come in crying because they are so cold. We can't teach children who are not at school and we can't teach children who are too cold to think of anything else.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
