Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love learning. They come in every morning with smiles on their faces, full of enthusiasm about what the day in front of them holds. The most significant thing about them is how much they love their school. We are part of a school community where the school is new and growing each and every year. The school we are a part of started a little over seven years ago and we are still growing. Our students love being a part of a newer school and helping to grow the community. They wear their school polo shirts with honor, and they love being a part of our community.
As wonderful as our school is because it is new and growing each year, it is extremely limited in its resources.
Each year as the school grows, the students grow older, and a new grade forms. Unfortunately, each year that a new grade begins, we have to start over from scratch. We are constantly scraping and scrounging around for resources and materials because we are building our school from the ground up.
My Project
After being home for close to 18 months my third grade students are ready to return to in person learning. The majority of the second graders in my school coming up to third have been learning from home since March of 2020. I am so excited to welcome them back to our school building and provide some consistency and normalcy in their lives. As a teacher, I have missed having a full class of students in front of me and have missed teaching the way it should be.
Since these past 18 months have been such a challenge for everyone, my school has decided not to ask families to provide school supplies for their children.
School supplies can be very costly for families and after the year they have had, requiring them to spend extra money on a huge amount of supplies didn't feel right. These are supplies that students need to succeed. Things like dry erase boards and markers are a crucial way for them to show their mathematical thinking during math time. Scissors, glue, and paper are all things that students need during writing workshop. They use these materials to write, revise, edit, and publish their writing. Colored pencils are crayons are used during note taking for reading and writing workshop, as well as projects across all content areas. As you can see, these basic supplies are things that my students use on a everyday basis and this year they just will not have their own. This is where my project comes in. I want to be able to supply them with these materials so they can be excited to learn and so they can succeed as scholars in their third grade year.
