My Students

I'm the teacher of 22 wonderfully curious second graders. My students come from many different backgrounds, socioeconomic levels and academic abilities. They thrive in one of the larger public school districts in our area.

Even though I celebrate their differences, the one thing that they all have in common is the need to feel safe inside our classroom.

In light of the recent horrific events surrounding school shootings it’s no wonder that there is a certain level of noticeable anxiety among young children looking for confidence that as their teacher I can keep them safe. No child should ever have to be afraid to come to school. This is one place that they should be able to feel safe at all times. I feel blessed to be in a district that takes the safety of children seriously. However, I've made a decision that I will do whatever it takes to protect my students from harm and to treat them as I would want my own child to be treated.

My Project

I know that this is not a normal request. And actually, I'm praying that this is one thing that I will never actually have to put to use in a real situation. I'm trying to be that teacher that can show my kids that I am ready for that "just in case moment." Can I really place a price on that? We practice lock-down drills and talk about the what-ifs all the time. Having something such as the Intruder Defense System in our classroom is something that is very concrete that I can show them we have to use as an extra measure of safety. I believe that this will help to greatly ease their minds about something that is so seemingly out of their control.
