Help me give my students the tools such as batteries, laminating pouches, ink, paper, an activity centers, etc. they need to develop their writing and pre-writing skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are special education pre schoolers living on the country side of Oahu with varying disabilities. Many of our students come from low income families and approximately 50% of our school qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch.
Most of my students are non verbal and rely on adaptive technology and techniques to communicate.
Our classroom uses a wide array of items that appeal to senses to provide a holistic approach to learning. We use a lot of visuals including Picture Exchange Cards which we are constantly printing. As such, we're constantly going through all types of office and craft supplies.
My Project
I have a lot of curious writers this year, and I'm beginning to put more emphasis on letter writing practice. We have been using some small white boards and dry erase markers, but it's very difficult to supervise all my students who would much rather draw on the floor or the walls than where they're supposed to be! I'm hoping to get a lot of use out of these Write the Letter Activity Centers that can draw and erase with no fuss! Since we have all this interest in writing, I'm trying to give them other fine motor activities to do as well. For instance, we ordered a fun maze-Pre-Writing Magnetic Board which will help them gain the muscle control to hold a pencil. Given that my students are special needs, we also need a few more adaptive Spring Scissors to help them to succeed in the early stages of learning to use them. For the students who don't yet have language, we end up printing a lot of picture exchange cards to laminate so we added some color ink and lamination pouches as well.
