Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been a teacher for 13 years, but this is my first year teaching 1st grade.
Currently, I work at a Title I school in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, which means we serve a very diverse group of students who are most at risk for failing and children who are experiencing homelessness.
Many of my students come from households with little or no educational materials at home that can help their learning needs. I currently work as a first-grade teacher with the most compassionate and funny group of students I have ever had. They have an enthusiasm to learn as I have never seen before.
My Project
This year has been rewarding for many students as it is their first time in a school building in over a year and a half due to the pandemic. I have had the privilege of watching their faces light up as they enter the classroom and see all the materials they didn't have accessible during remote learning. Seeing their excitement of being in school makes me think of John Warren who once said, "a teacher's task is to initiate the learning process then get out of the way."
My job as a teacher is to provide my students with the tools they will need to succeed as learners and allow them to learn through each other and real-world experiences.
With your generous donations, I can allow my students the opportunity to feel like they are in charge of their learning. With the Magnetic Mobile Whiteboard, my first graders can adjust the height of the board and work independently without restrictions. Your donations will allow all of my students the opportunity to work in small groups anywhere in the classroom. They can use the magnetic board to display their work and explain their thinking.
Your generous donation will also help ensure that all the students have the same opportunity to hear me speak and clearly hear all the lessons being taught. Due to the pandemic, our classroom has become very loud with background noise. We currently have two air purifiers and an air conditioner running at all times, making it extremely hard for the students to hear. Your generous donation will help in purchasing the ZOWEETEK Wireless Voice Amplifier with UHF Microphone Headset. The voice amplifier would be greatly appreciated as we continue to learn through the pandemic.
