My students need journals for their daily writing tasks. They also will improve their reading and writing with fishing for sight words games. Both of these supplies will enhance writing instruction in my classroom.

My Students

Mrs. B's Sharp Bunch is a talent development/gifted classroom for kindergarten students. Students qualify for this program through knowledge of their letters and sounds or number sense. We are part of a diverse school of 620 students. Our school community is tight-knit. We are an extremely positive campus who care about the social-emotional and academic well being of our students!

Our scholars know they are in a safe place where they are encouraged and pushed to reach their academic potential!

Our school motto is "Inspiring students to learn today and lead tomorrow." This motto is fulfilled with a fantastic positive behavior support program to create a safe environment for learning. It is demonstrated through our campus-wide Peaceful Playground program which teaches students to play games and play with others in a fair and safe way. We also have a rigorous curriculum which pushes all our students to reach their personal potential! Our school is a neighborhood school although we have a good chunk of students from outside our boundary lines who open enroll for the stellar education provided at our school.

My Project

The students in my classroom use daily journals to engage in the writing process.

These journals become relics of their learning and growth throughout the school year.

My students begin the year drawing pictures to write a story and adding a few labels to their picture in "kid writing." Kid writing is invented spelling using the sounds they can identify by hearing them in words.

As we learn and grow, we learn to write sentences with an uppercase beginning, spaces between our words, and punctuation at the end of our sentences. We learn to use the phonics skills we are learning in reading and apply them to our writing.

Many common words in English don't follow the rules of phonics. That is when we must practice sight words. These are words we know and can spell automatically in reading and writing! This fishing game will be a FUN alternative to flash cards for sight word practice.

We eventually grow into writing informative, narrative and opinion paragraphs! The growth my students show is incredible and this project will allow them to use journals which are tough enough to last through the year and provide evidence of their incredible accomplishments!
