Hello, I am Mrs. Howard and I am a Kindergarten teacher in the small town of Port Angeles, WA. My little elementary school has around 475 students and 51% of students receive free and reduced lunch. Like all children in the time of Covid-19, my incoming students have been mostly quarantined and without pre-school, daycare, parks, and events for several months.
My school district is working hard to open schools in the Fall while also keeping staff and student safety in mind.
My young students will be experiencing school for the first time in a very unique, and to be honest, frightening way. My young students will need to practice social distancing by having a desk of their own six feet from other students. This is drastically different from the way we would typically start kindergarten and will be a challenge for students that will mostly be five years old.
My Project
I am requesting wobble seats for my Kindergarten students who will need to sit at stationary desks six feet apart from others. In my typical classroom prior to Covid -19, I would provide flexible seating for student success in the form of moving computer chairs, clipboards on the carpet, bean bag chairs, donut seats, wobble chairs, etc. In the interest of keeping students and staff safe when schools open in the fall, students will need to sit at their own desks during instruction instead of on a carpet together or in previously mentioned flexible seating choices.
Wobble chairs have consistently been the favorite of my kindergarten students for seating as they have the choice to move their bodies and increase their focus while remaining at their desks.
This is especially helpful for students who have ADHD and behavior disorders. I would like to be able to provide every student with their own wobble chair this year when so much time will be spent learning at desks.
