My Project
The growing need for sensory resources is why I wanted to create this project help students have a more enjoyable art experience. I was inspired by the Children's Museum sensory bags that you can get as you enter the museum. The earmuff headphones will offer the ability for several students at one time to have a better sound experience because my classroom creates an echo. This will allow for students to focus more on their work instead of the reverberation of sound as the muffs are designed to still let the students hear but with a different range of sound. The magnetic tiles are a good choice for the students who have tactile needs. It will allow them to build things that are temporary so that they can create new ideas but also holding two or three at a time will help with the fidget need. Also the magnetic tiles are easier to clean than some of the other tactile sensory options. The weighted caterpillars are good for the students that get overwhelmed and the pressure of the caterpillar gives the feeling of grounding. This is a good alternative to the idea of the weighted blanket that some students might use outside of school.
Students deserve to have resources that will allow them to engage with the classroom as their highest self.
I believe these resources are a step in the right direction for not only making it accessible to students who have unique needs but also bring awareness that there are are alternative approaches to creating a welcoming space. My plan is to have the resources available in a part of the classroom so that the students are able to use them as needed.
