Our 5th graders are 10 and 11 year-old children who are the oldest students in our elementary. They are working hard to be leaders to our K-4 students. Each and every one wants to do his or her best and be thought of as a good citizen. They love to serve as safety patrols, morning announcement team members, and they especially love helping our school "tater tots", the kindergarten and 1st grade students. With a wide variety of student needs in the building, one student our 5th graders especially care for is a 1st grader who is learning to walk without his wheelchair. Our students play with this child on recess, talk with him in the hallways, and on one particular day, they cheered for him upon seeing him walk for the very first time last fall.
These empathetic 5th graders are eager to learn and are starting to think ahead to what could be possible for them in the future of middle school, high school, and beyond.
They are starting to develop strengths and talents in and out of the classroom. It is crucial to make school a productive, positive place and that they experience well-earned success.
My Project
Within our group of 5th grade kiddos, we have many different abilities of learning. I teach English/Language Arts, and we have a wide span of reading and writing abilities. It is a challenge to help each student grow as readers and writers. One of the ways we can help students become stronger is by use of a DAILY individualized computer program that caters to an individual's needs to reinforce reading, grammar and spelling skills. At the beginning of the school year, we ask each student to bring a set of headphones or earbuds to leave at school in their lockers in order to use this and other programs. Many families can provide them, but they are poor quality and break easily. Other families cannot provide them, so we teachers try to provide sets for student use. For some students, it is always a scramble to find working headphones.
