I am a second grade teacher on the south side of Chicago in a low income school. When I left my previous classroom, I did not take many of my own classroom materials because I did not want to deprive my former students of the environment that they had become familiar with. I also did not want to deprive the incoming teacher of quality materials. Now I find myself at the teacher store almost every other day acquiring materials that I depend on for quality instruction. The issue I am facing is the need for learning centers in my classroom. I am teaching a group of primary students that have never been exposed to learning centers or guided reading. Guided reading is known as the best practice for reading instruction, because it allows for individual and differentiated instruction. My students and I would be grateful if a generous donor would be willing to donate a kidney shaped reading table and four chairs to our classroom. A kidney shaped reading table would allow me to facilitate a more effective guided reading group. My students would be able to focus better on instruction and learning if they were able to participate in a small group instruction. A guided reading table would allow me to provide quality literacy instruction to my primary students.
