Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Whenever I tell people I teach middle school, the first reaction is usually something like "How can you stand it?" or "Wow, that must be tough!" with the occasional "Oh, God bless you!" thrown in. I used to feel the same way until I met my first group of seventh and eighth graders. They are the best! Yes, sometimes the hormones go into overdrive, but my students are hysterically fun, have a great desire to learn and are old enough to understand and discuss interesting topics.

This year, I've changed schools, and I look forward to building a space where my new students feel safe and challenged to become their best selves!

While my students don't all share the same culture, most share an economic status. All of our student body receives free breakfast and lunch. Despite all of the challenges that they face, my students come to school willing and eager to learn. They have great plans, hopes and dreams for the future. They are funny and bright and I consider myself lucky to be their teacher.

My Project

As the year goes on, my kids are becoming amazing independent readers. They are coming in each day with a fervor for reading that is every teacher's dream. They have devoured poetry, absorbed science fiction, and read graphic novels and manga at a pace that would make your head spin! They have read hundreds of books in the beginning marking period.

On the wall in my classroom, there is a poster sized paper covered in student writing - it's their book wish list.

It contains hundreds of titles that they want to read in class. When I am able to get one off that list, I feel like Santa Claus distributing toys on Christmas. This project will allow me to completely wipe out the list and stock my library with enough books to keep us rockin' and readin' throughout the winter!
