Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has the grit to achieve anything regardless of where we come from or what we've been through. Each day, the students' determination shines in the case of adversity to master the skills they need to be successful in their lives. Our classroom is an inspiration to students everywhere.
Despite growing up difficult situations and stressful home lives, these students persevere through any task.
It brings tears to my eyes to think about the beauty of the voracious pursuit of knowledge in my classroom. My students push through even the most rigorous of projects and tasks regardless of the rigor. By explicitly teaching the value and importance of grit, I have seen a transformational change in my classroom. I teach students to believe that, "When the work is harder, you get smarter," and "Confusion is the first step to learning." Students went from saying, "I can't," "I'm bad at math," and "This is too hard for me," to saying, "I can do this, I need more time," "I can't do this, yet, will you show me again," and "This is my best sentence, here."
My Project
These wiggle stools will allow my students to sit comfortably in reading groups because currently, I have reading groups so large that they cannot sit comfortably at my reading group table.
These wiggle stools will allow all eight of my students in each reading group to get direct instruction at their level at the same time, resulting in better outcomes in comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary.
Currently, the chairs we have are too big to fit around my horseshoe-shaped group instruction table and I have students leaning over and standing around uncomfortably receive instruction with their peers at their level. These stools would enable eight students to sit around the table with room to spare and I would be able to reach my students at their levels more effectively.
