My Students
Obesity is on the rise, as well as multiple health issues. Students' poor food choices are not helping them to want to move. Pedometers would really help them realize their fitness level and will encourage them to move more and be more accountable! Please help us accomplish this!
Our high school is a grade nine through twelve comprehensive high school in a university town in California located 175 miles northeast of San Francisco in the Sacramento Valley.
Agriculture has historically been this town's major industry; more recently, retail trade and tourism have played larger roles in the area's economy. Health care and education remain major employers, and there is a lively arts scene, including theater, music, drama, and dance, which led to this town's designation in 2002 as one of the the 100 Best Art Towns in America.
My Project
Pedometers will count the students' number of steps in a period of activity. If students actually see what their activity level is, they will be more encouraged to improve as they continually use them. We need accountability of students' daily activity. At our high school, we believe "What gets monitored gets done." We need the students to record and monitor their daily progress.
Active students are happy students!
Test scores improve, as well as self-esteem. Teaching adolescents to be active will develop healthy habits, which will continue into adulthood. Active people tend to eat healthier. If students get in the habit of inactivity, they will most likely be sedentary as adults. We want to develop lifelong fitness and good health!
