Many of our students come from high-risk, low-income backgrounds.
Some students face learning disabilities and struggle learning English as a second language. They are eager to learn, tackle challenges, and absorb new experiences. However, we need additional support to offer our students new opportunities. Our students are eager to be part of a team and be active, however there are limited programs currently in place.
My Project
These resources will help our basketball program develop Habits of Work that will translate inside and outside of school. These Habits include perseverance, eagerness, and self-awareness. We believe that through our program students will have a chance to practice these habits and really make them a part of their identity. Through daily practices and competition they will learn valuable lessons in teamwork, perseverance, and physical fitness.
We need basketballs, fitness equipment, and jerseys to reach more students and to run efficient and organized practices. Our rims are broken, and they need new nets. We need portable storage devices because practices can take place in the gym, outdoors, in the hall, or even in the cafeteria.
We plan to directly link our program to the classroom.
Each student will have individual improvement plans for their academic progress and behavior. Study halls will take place before practices, and students will conference with teachers and coaches.
The equipment will make a huge difference in the organization of practices, the number of students we can reach, and the quality of the time we spend with them. The habits learned will transfer from the court, to the classroom, and to life.
