This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Final drafts everywhere, but not a marker to decorate them with! A highlight of completing a project in my Language Arts class is presenting, displaying and celebrating the beautiful end result. But without some basic "creative" supplies - this amazing work is not getting the treatment it deserves.
This year, I teach three energetic 7th grade Language Arts classes, comprised of 93 amazing students from just about every ethnic background you can imagine.
The only thing they seem to enjoy more than reading and writing are the presentations that they give once an assignment or unit has been completed. They want their work to adorn the halls of their school. They want to create covers for their reports. But my school lacks the funding to supply us with these basic necessities.
My Project
Markers. Colored pencils. Glue sticks. Those items probably don't sound too thrilling to you, but if I could magically pull them out of my supply closet for my students to use, there would be TREMENDOUS cheers that would fill my classroom (and probably overflow into the halls too). Projects would be decorated. The classroom and bulletin boards would come alive with color and creativity. Language Arts is all about expressing yourself and your ideas, but that's difficult to do only with a #2 pencil. With these supplies on hand, my three classes would be able to put the proverbial "cherry on top" of their completed assignments.
I always stress to my students that they need to put their best foot forward, both in and outside of the classroom.
I tell them that the work that they submit is a representation of both themselves and their families. They take that motif seriously. However, up until this point, they haven't been able to fully embrace that idea. They need these supplies to complete the creative process. And with your help, they'll be able to.
