This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every year so many amazing new children's books are published, and every year I try my best to buy up as many as I can for my classroom. However, books are expensive! A trip to Barnes and Noble can add up quickly! Two series have caught my eye with their incredible illustrations and funky fonts.

My students are 2nd graders in a high-poverty community in a large, urban school district in Illinois.

Our school is Pre-K-8th grade, which unfortunately means a lot of students and not enough funding! The students at my school are hard-working and have a strong desire to learn. It is my goal to provide my students with the very best education possible. In order to do that I need to have a wide range of texts available to my students. Many of my students are English Language Learners and many of my students enter 2nd grade below grade level. Therefore, it is so important for me to have engaging texts that will not discourage my students and texts for a wide range of reading abilities.

My Project

The Fly Guy series and the Bananas Books will be such a hit with my students. I recently used them in my graduate school practicum, and found that even reluctant readers couldn't wait to get their hands on them! My students will be able to choose these books for independent readers, book clubs, partner reading activities, and take home books. They will be a great addition to our classroom library and help me achieve my goal of maintaining a print-rich environment and developing life-long readers.
