About My Students

I teach 11th and 12th-grade students in Physical and Forensic Science classes at our local high school and participate in our after school program. Although my school serves a diverse array of students, they share one commonality- they all need a caring adult that will foster their love of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

My students, both in class and in our after school program, are eager to research all things SCIENCE and are ready to turn our classroom into a completely STUDENT CENTERED learning hub.

They appreciate that my class offers student-centered learning activities that actively engage the students, while offering students the option of being in charge of their learning. Unfortunately, to accommodate this style of learning, we need supplies and research capabilities. Since budget constraints do not afford us the opportunity to purchase digital supplies, we are asking for donations.

Our desire is to create a student centered learning hub to assist students as they work. We hope to transform our classroom into a place where students can collaborate, investigate and share ideas. One of the components of a student centered classroom is having access to technology.

We plan to create a designated "technology center" within the classroom so that students can utilize the technology at this station as they collaborate, investigate and share their ideas.

We hope that the four Chromebooks that we have requested will be a start to creating this space for our students.

This space will be a permanent hub for students to visit when they need to use technology for the assignments, labs, activities and lessons.

In Their Own Words

We want a space in our classroom specifically designed for research. Research is a major part of the student directed learning environment and we feel that a special research space would make it possible for us to conduct research separate from the day to day lesson space in the classroom.

We hope to lead other students (and teachers) as our school begins to transition into more student-led projects and student led classrooms. We feel as though being pioneers to this type of learning can now be carried into other classrooms as we continue to move through our high school career.

It is difficult for students to sit still in a classroom for an hour. We are not used to that. We like the idea of the student-led classroom, because we are free to choose where we work and how we work (collaboratively, individual, team, partners, etc). We like that there are teachers out there that care about how we learn best.
