I teach 8th grade math to special education and general education students. Many of my students are "hands on' learners.
My co-teacher and I teach encourage our students to try their best and to inquire about everything they can to understand the way to succeed in the world they are becoming a part of. As they explore, they need to have the necessary supplies to experiment with different mediums, not just the technological world.
There is so much beauty in math. It is all around us - especially in nature. We want to bring math to life in our classroom. Donating to our student led project will give our students access to a Silhouette which will help to bring their work to life. They would like to share the beauty of math in nature and in art and a Silhouette will do just that for us.
Working together to create this project will help my students to develop their feelings of empathy and teamwork for their fellow classmates. Thinking of others, who do not have the same advantages as they do will make them better members of society. Always pay it forward!
This project will bring math to life. Having a Silhouette will inspire their creativity in math class.
In Their Own Words
The goal we are trying to accomplish is to have access to a Silhouette in our math classroom. Sometimes math can be boring but when we do creative activities - especially art activities, it motivates us to try harder. Ms. Saladino would love to do more creative art in our math class with us and the Silhouette would definitely be perfect for those activities.
This is the first time that Ms. Saladino has written a project for Donors Choose. We have had some experience in writing projects with other teachers, so we wanted to help Ms. Saladino in writing her first project. We are getting really good at this! Brainstorming, collaborating, and working together always makes this a fun experience. Each of us made a contribution to make this project as successful as it can be.
This project is important to us the students because we are trying to make math fun by combining the fine arts with mathematics. Not everyone is a mathematician, but we are all artists inside of us. We want to bring out our inner strengths and make math fun and accessible for all in our classroom. Who knows? Maybe this will motivate some of us to continue to pursue math careers in our future.
