Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I often think about the world that we are leaving our children, and the need to reinforce with my students how we can better care for our planet (so that they too will have a beautiful world to enjoy as adults).
My students are very active and enjoy kinesthetic activities and lessons.
About 75% of my class are English Language Learners, and 25% are native English speakers. Our school is located in a low-income neighborhood, and 100% of students receive free lunch. Despite the economic challenges of their neighborhood, my students are eager to learn, and come to school everyday ready to learn new skills.
My Project
I am working with my students on various projects related to climate change, and will have an Ambassador Girl Scout in my classroom to make presentations to my class. My students need: mini planter pots, soil, pea and vegetable seeds, and books about climate change (such as, "The Curious Garden"). Through these materials my students will learn how important it is to eat organic and/or local, and how they can start their own mini garden with the pots, soil, and seeds. Students will sow and cultivate the plants in our school garden, as well as have a plant to take home. They will also study how fossil fuels from cars and factories are polluting the air and causing a detrimental effect to the environment, and the need for more plants and trees in order to combat air pollution. My students will use these materials to gain hands-on learning experience in combating climate change, and also in completing interactive environmental games and making a multi-media presentation.
This project will impact my students' lives by teaching them age appropriate and practical ways to take care of their planet, and of the unfortunate truths about the things that will disappear from their world if they are not cared for.
