This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to open up a book for the first time? If you can, you know that it can be frustrating because the vocabulary and content can be hard to understand. This is exactly how my first graders feel!

I am a first grade teacher to a class of amazing children.

Our school is a Title One, high poverty, Reading First School located in an urban area. My students are eager and active learners. During our reading workshop block, I use a program called the Daily 5. This program encourages my students to read to themselves, read to some one, make words, and listen to reading. My students love to read so please help me make reading for them even better!

My Project

When my student select three activities during our reading rotation, they are able to spend over 90 minutes reading. This means that they need books that they can read. I teach many strategies that help my students identify books on their level;however, I don't have a lot of books to choose from. I am asking for materials (book sets and word building games) which will bring specific books on my students' reading levels into our classroom and into my students' hands. These libraries would open up a world of choice for independent reading as well as make my students even more eager to read. They also would allow me to instruct my students better because there will be a greater variety of text to choose from.
