My Project
The students at my school mostly live in the apartment buildings that surround our school in Urban Honolulu. For many of my students, the idea of "nature" is the local district park... Hawaii is filled with so many unique landscapes and ecosystems, that many of my students don't get a chance to experience on a regular basis.
Help me to provide them with a hands-on experience to mālama 'aina (Hawaiian for "to care and honor the land") at a local wetlands while keeping their hands safe with gardening gloves!
We are hoping to plan a field trip for our students to the Kawainui Marsh to learn about local ecosystems, the impact of native and invasive species play in food webs, and to participate in a service project to help weed out invasive grasses and sedges and plant native species of shrubs.
Multiple research studies have proven how valuable it is for children to spend time in nature. With the effects of the past two years with COVID, now more than ever, kids need a chance to explore and enjoy time in nature. Helping to supply us with gardening gloves ensures that all of the students can participate safely in our service project!
