Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As students move forward from elementary to middle school, students are practicing opinion writing. As they reflect on social issues, students learn about advocacy and the power of finding their voice. As an art educator, I want to integrate art as a medium my students can use to empower themselves and their communities.
The "Help Us to Help" project has two goals.
First, to encourage students to be engaged in their writing assignments. Second, to use their imagination and creativity to create art pieces to support a social cause. Students work in small groups with the support of mom volunteers. Art projects include rock painting, embroidering, sewing teddy bears, painting, drawing, video making, slow motion, yarn accessories, dance performing, event coordinating, graphic design, etc.
An important value, we teach in fifth grade is advocacy. The art supplies I am requesting will be used to create art masterpieces. These masterpieces will be featured in the end-of-the-year students' fundraising event and art silent auction. Teaching students to use their voice and skills to support a cause they care about, empowers them to believe that they too can create change. Last year, students fundraised $2000 and donated it to Saint Jude's Cancer Research Hospital.
