Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fourth grade teacher in Bushwick, Brooklyn. My students are primarily Hispanic and African-American. Some of my students are learning English as a second language. They are an inquisitive, lovely, large group of students. They love to read and write and share their thoughts. I would like to enhance the reading levels and progress of my students. I have observed that when students reach the fourth grade there is little to no emphasis on phonics skills. As a result, fluency breaks down and students begin to struggle. I worry about my students in this area. Word attack becomes difficult when you do not know basic sounds and how to blend sounds together. In order to best aid my students, I would like to utilize a phonics program in my classroom that could be used with computers. My students love technology and I believe that it would be a great way to integrate phonics and computers. Hooked on Phonics seems like a program that would address the needs of each individual student. I would also consider sending the CD home to be borrowed, so students who have computer access in their household would also benefit from using the program. I want my students to achieve a great amount of success and I believe that by enhancing their basic reading skills, they will go on to conquer and achieve other great things.
