My Students

When my students walk into my classroom, the first thing they learn is that they are now officially OWLS. Yes, from day one, they are Outstanding, Wonderful, Learning, Students! They take this very much to heart. It puts them all at the same academic level.

My classroom is a place of community, which is the most important thing I teach them all school year.

This hopefully leads to our becoming a family. That is important, because our students are diverse. They have different types of backgrounds with many different stories to tell, especially since my school is considered at a low income level. This however does not change their eagerness to explore new things, learn new things, and grow! It is actually a student who has inspired me to do this particular project.

My Project

I have thought a long time now about a 3D printer for the classroom. The other day one of my student's set this whole thing into motion because of something she said.

We have read many articles in Scholastic News that have discussed the wonders of 3D printers and how they help the world around us.

We have read about dogs that were disabled who are now able to get around because a 3D printer created prosthetic legs on wheels to help the dog have front "legs."

We also read about a girl not much older than my 9 year old students who had a prosthetic arm but wanted to do something fun so she planned and created an arm that could blow out glitter!

A 3D printer could benefit my students in so many ways. They can think about real-world problems they can solve. We could come up with a fun project that would help out another class in my school like bubble-wands for our pre-K students. We can use it to create STEAM engineering projects. There are so many possibilities!

However what really got me thinking was that one student. We were doing a project where we had read a story about morning meals from around the world. I had them write their point of view about trying new things and then they picked the food they thought they wanted to try.

We created 3D food out of paper to go with our writing. The student turned around and said to me "this would be so much fun if we had a 3D printer. Oh my gosh! What a fantastic way to make reading and writing more engaging for my students!
