My Project
I teach a Full Day Kindergarten class at a Title I school, and I love it! My students come from very diverse backgrounds and for many Kindergarten is their first exposure to English and a classroom setting. My students speak English, Spanish, Cantonese, and Marshallese. Many of my students come from limited English proficiency homes, and half of them come from very low socioeconomic backgrounds. Sadly, many also come from homes with a trauma background and experience food and housing scarcity. The structure and routine school provides them with is often the only time they experience security.
I am requesting funds to purchase items that my students can use in the classroom to practice essential self-regulatory skills.
Today's students come with fewer and fewer social skills as they enter public education, and my students are no exception. My students experience distractibility, inattention, temper outbursts, physical aggression, and more on a daily basis. These items will help calm them, help them feel safe, and help them learn how to be in charge of their emotions when their life outside of school feels out of control. The items I want to purchase will help my students learn and practice the self-regulation skills that are so vital to their success!
