Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach second grade in the largest school district in the state. This is a large urban district. My students come from homes of poverty. This is an inclusion classroom and many of my students are learning disabled. I also teach ESL students. Many ESL students have trouble understanding English. The use of manipulatives helps to overcome this language barrier.
My students need to experience math with hands-on manipulatives. My students simply do not have the experience necessary to think abstractly. They need concrete ways to understand the math concepts I am teaching. Unfortunately, manipulatives are expensive. I can only afford to buy a select few. I need your help supplying these children with the essential manipulatives to successfully pass second grade.
Please think strongly about funding this request. No Child Left Behind requires ALL children to make gains. Without these manipulatives, my students this year and for many years to come will not reach their full potential.
