Help me give my students the opportunity to thrive by providing them tools that will help them learn about their needs and how to support their needs such as mindfulness, emotion regulation, and mental health education.

I am from a school district that has initiatives such as Restorative Justice Black Excellence. What does this mean for schools? It means that we work hard to make school a place where students feel safe, welcomed, and valued, especially our students of color. My fabulous staff and community works hard to make strides towards these goals.
I work with all of the students in my building as the school psychologist, and help support school-wide systems to build a positive community as well as more individual student needs such as emotion regulation and anxiety needs.
My students are dedicated, joyful, charismatic, resilient kids that deserve every opportunity to thrive!
One of my students with anxiety had difficulty identifying and managing her own feelings of anxiety. She knew that she was feeling unhappy, but couldn't find the words to describe her feelings or how she might be able to help herself. When I introduced a book to her, Wilma Jean the Worry Machine, a story about a girl about her age with anxiety and how she coped, my student was able to relate to some of the feelings that Wilma Jean experienced and begin to identify her needs and how to manage her feelings.
By learning about a character that she could relate to, that book opened the door to discovering WHAT her needs were and HOW she can cope.
With materials such as culturally relevant books, literature to teach social emotional skills, materials to practice those learned skills, tools to normalize mental health needs and support strategies such as mindfulness, I can help other students discover WHAT their needs are and HOW they can thrive at school. With these tools, I can continue working towards the goal of integrating restorative justice into the fabric of my school.
