A typical day in our "classroom" is anything but typical! Most notably, we do not actually have a classroom. We have a "house", a group of rooms and spaces that 2 grade levels, 6 teachers and 110 students share. Every day is a new adventure, full of new and exciting challenges.
Our school is a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Academy in it's very first year.
Our students are crazy about these subjects and their enthusiasm is infectious. They come from a wide variety of social and economic backgrounds. They have come from schools all over our district and outside our district. They are gifted students, special education students, second language learners, and everything in between. They have come together to make this year a one of a kind experience.
This year has been full of new challenges for the students and teachers. What has worked in typical classrooms in the past, has not always worked here. We have changed our schedule and teaching models more times than I can count, but our kids have always gone with the flow. They never complain, and always jump into whatever we have planned with enthusiasm and joy. It is a true blessing to work with such amazing kids!
My Project
Our students are digital natives. They use technology as naturally as many of us used pencils as children. They love any opportunity they have to use technology to practice skills, or learn new concepts. I know they will love these Osmo learning game systems. The systems simply connect to the top of our existing iPads. They work as mini-projectors and allow the students to use their desk surfaces as an additional touchscreen. They can play both word and math games on the Osmo systems. The future possibilities for the systems are endless as more apps are added.
We envision our students using the Osmo systems to work in stations with each other, to build new skills, to practice old skills and to collaborate with other students to build a deeper understanding of concepts. We love that the Osmo takes an iPad from a solitary experience to a collaborative experience! This is one of the primary goals of our school!
We believe the opportunity to collaborate with each other using the Osmo learning game systems, will help to deepen understanding of key concepts for our students.
We also believe that the opportunity to experience some of the newest and most innovative technology available will inspire our students to think outside the proverbial box, and perhaps consider what they can engineer in the future.
