Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We want our students to enjoy reading again. We have several classes of juniors and seniors who still need to pass the state exam in order to graduate, and any love they had for reading was long ago squashed by test prep.

They are struggling readers and writers who cringe any time they see a book, but we can change that!

Our students live in a large urban district with a predominately Hispanic population. A majority of our students are considered economically disadvantaged, and 9% have limited English proficiency. In addition, our special education population is bigger than the district average. We are a Title I eligible school with limited resources. Our students struggle with reading and writing. Many of them have IEPs, 504s, and ESL backgrounds. Many of them have taken and failed the five hour state exam seven times. Needless to say, they feel dejected.

My Project

Flight by Sherman Alexie is a highly engaging and popular book that our students can relate to. It's the story of a troubled foster kid on the verge of a life-changing act. The book is equal parts hilarious and tragic. Our students will be so caught up in the story that they won't even remember that they're preparing for a test.

We want our students to graduate high school as lifelong readers and we want their last years in English to be positive experiences.

Rather than do direct test prep, we plan on using Flight to practice the skills the students need to develop. Specifically, we will focus on identifying and analyzing literary elements, writing paragraphs with analysis and supporting evidence, and writing persuasive essays. However, our work will also go way beyond the test. The novel has universal themes that we'll be able to discuss and learn from.
