This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember taking notes in middle school being a fun experience? Probably not! I would love to have my students engage with the texts they are reading in a meaningful way that is also colorful and fun!
I am lucky enough to love walking into my school every single day.
It is a place that values the individual needs of students, the development of a strong community, and a place that aims to grow book lovers for life. My students are a vibrant group of 6th graders from all over Washington, DC. Their backgrounds are diverse and they come together to form a unique community and culture where all students can thrive.
My Project
My 6th graders are learning how to annotate the text and take notes in their independent reading books in meaningful ways.
What the reader gets from annotating is a deeper initial reading and an understanding of the text that lasts. You can deliberately engage the author in conversation and questions, maybe stopping to argue, pay a compliment, or clarify an important issue— much like having a teacher or storyteller with you in the room. If and when you come back to the book, that initial interchange is recorded for you, making an excellent and entirely personal study tool.
These supplies will add live to a seemingly dull task of notetaking.
Colorful markers and post-it notes make the mundane exciting! My students will use these tools to learn valuable skills that will lay a solid foundation for middle school, high school, and beyond.
