Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My middle school students come from all social-economics background and they all want to become better versions of themselves each day. They strive for independence, yet yearning for structure and guidance to combat their own personal problems, improve their academic performance, and social/life skills.
This group of students encompasses multiple capabilities, talents, and strengths they have yet to fully discover; and all it takes is exposure, motivation, and changing their mindset.
Through conversations and interactions, they learn to deal with their personal to family life problems, social and academic struggles. They learn patience, responsibility, good work habits, self-esteem, and even learn about different cultures through the community of like-minded middle age peers.
The students in my class strive for excellence and genuinely care about one another as they work on bettering themselves. They just need the right tools to help them grow.
A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches trust." -Gertrude Jekyll
My Project
When it comes to our school garden, each student takes pride in taking part in creating and sustaining it. During the California heat, our plants, especially the young seedlings and baby plants struggle to fight the heat and sometimes they don't make it. In the past the students have used towels, plastic table covers, and even big post-it poster papers that we don't use anymore to shade the plants from being burned by the heat waves and the sun's direct light during peak hour (10am-2pm). However, they were ineffective and time-consuming.
Having the right tool in the garden plays a huge role in helping students understand sustainability and effectiveness of a thriving garden.
They will see how these tools help them grow stronger and healthier plants for many seasons to come. They will be able to apply this knowledge and create their own version of them at home should they one day need them in their own sustainable home gardens. But the most important part of this lesson is to learn the right way to do it first and then they can get creative with building their own.
It would be an incredible gift to our students to be able to use these tools in the garden so they can learn how to create a thriving garden.
