About My Students
Scott Elementary School is a K-6 school in Evansville, IN. These hard-working students have huge hearts for others, and are always thinking about how to make the world--and their community--even better. Scott utilizes a mindfulness curriculum that incorporates social-emotional learning, leading students to think broadly, carefully, and with compassion toward their peers, their teachers, and others. Scott students can always be counted on to come together when a family, student, or teacher is in need, and this is the driving force behind their decision to create this grant.
All kids need books to read! Reading helps us learn, grow, think, and interact with each other. Developing a love of reading in students helps them to be successful in life, and teaches us patience, perseverance, and passion. This project is also helping us develop our communication skills, because we are learning how to address a wide range of people and express the importance of our goals.
In Their Own Words
We want to update our library. Many of our books are older and there are some fun new titles we want to get for all ages in our school (we have almost 1000 students!). We want to engage readers from Kindergarten to sixth grade (and our school has a daycare, so even really little kids will benefit!).
We have wanted to do something for our whole school all year, and specifically for our library. We spend our recess and study hall time helping our librarian shelve books, organize titles, and update her boards. We love our librarian and we love our school, and we want to give both a gift before we leave--the best gift you can give: books!
Every classroom in our school comes to the library. However, sometimes the book kids want is already checked out or the library doesn't have it at all! Keeping kids interested and making sure they can access the books they want is very important to learning and developing a love of reading!
