My Students

Help us dive straight into learning with the supplies we need to start the year off on the right foot!

The students you will be donating to are a very special bunch.

They are considered to have special needs and need to be in a self contained special education class (12:1:1), which is a smaller environment, with less distractions, and I can focus on their individual needs. My class consists of students who have cognitive, emotional, social and physical delays. Their disabilities range from speech and language impaired, autism, health impairments, emotionally disturbed and learning disabled. They are very energetic and very busy which is why we are known as the "busy bees". My students inspire me everyday because even though they have cognitive or health impairments they are still full of life and have beautiful and joyful spirits.

My Project

I would love for my students to start the year off with all of these wonderful supplies, especially the journals so my students can continue with the love for writing they had developed last year. When I introduced the journals (also donated through Donors Choose last year) to them and explained they could write about whatever they wanted (and it was their own personal place to hold their thoughts), something changed in them. They loved that this journal belonged to them and they enjoyed writing, they were no longer reluctant to write. My students began looking forward to journal time and were often upset when it was time to put them away. They were having so much fun they forgot they were taking part in the writing process.

Unfortunately New York City suffered from numerous budget cuts.

Due to this fact, Teacher's Choice money (money we can use for our classrooms) has been cut drastically. I now have very little money to spend on supplies for my classroom, which is unfortunate because the students are the ones who are suffering the most due to lack of supplies. With these donated supplies, my students will have some of the tools they need to have successful school year.
