My Students
My students are a great group of kids. They are 9th graders with Autism and other developmental disabilities or special learning needs. They need more than a teacher who tells them what to do, they need an adult who will listen to them and work with them on their individual needs.
In the words of Temple Grandin, "Kids have to be exposed to different things in order to develop.
A child’s not going to find out he likes to play a musical instrument if you never exposed him to it."
My classroom assistant and I create a positive and interactive learning environment where our kids know that they are welcome, they are loved, they are appreciated, they are safe and they can succeed.
My Project
A carpet is very important in our daily routine. Students use the carpet each and every day in multiple classroom exchanges.
My students need a central spot for whole group instruction, class meetings, and to work independently on literacy and math skills.
Currently, we do not have a carpet and improvise with the floor and different desks. A few carpets are important as much of our academic learning takes place in a central spot and carpets would be a great place for it. Having more than one carpet makes it possible to make small groups.
Having carpets in our classroom would make a big positive change! Providing my students with carpets will allow them all to have a comfortable space to learn comfortably.
