My Students

Every year, I have the opportunity to meet new little people. Together, we embark on a wild journey of learning, exploring and teaching each other. We laugh (and cry!) and grow!

I feel fortunate that I get to work with over 40 students in first and second grades in small reading groups throughout the day.

Our Title I inner-city school is home to almost 1200 students with a multitude of ethnicities. There are over 30 languages spoken in our school. Our students attend school in a district where poverty is an issue, and many don't get the extra support or access to resources that are needed to help them be more successful in school. Despite these challenges, they are very excited about reading and learning about new things!

My Project

Many of my students are new to school, this country, and reading. Some, unfortunately, have little or no access to books at home. Through leveled, nonfiction books, my students would have the opportunity to read about things that interest them on comfortable reading levels. We will be able to use these during our small groups. Some may choose to read these during independent reading time or with a partner during buddy read.

Fostering the love and appreciation for reading and books is something I am dedicated to.

I want my students to view reading as a source of enjoyment and a guide to learning more rather than an assignment to be completed. I want them to WANT to read more. Please help me build their love of learning with these "just right" books that will help every reader feel confident and successful!
