In my music class, students are playing, dancing and on the move, but sometimes we need to just sit down and engage our minds.
I teach pre-kindergarten through third grade music in a small Title I school district in New Jersey.
Teaching students this young requires giving them many ways to experience music using multiple modalities. Most of the time we are up out of our spots and using our whole bodies. Sometimes, we need to sit in order to concentrate on singing properly, to play an instrument, or to listen to a story.
My Project
When asked to sit down in my class, my students currently have a nice big rug to sit on. This is great in most situations, but makes it difficult when students are playing instruments or singing. It leads to leaning and hunching, and makes it hard to take a deep breath and support a good sound.
With these stools, my students will learn the proper way to sit and hold their instruments, and will use correct posture.
The stools are also easily stackable, so we can reconfigure them and move them out of the way with ease when we are moving about in the classroom.
I am also asking for a stapler to replace our broken classroom one, and a guitar pick punch, so that we can never have to worry about running out of picks.
These stools and other materials will have a big impact on my students' musicianship. They would be thrilled to have a better place to sit in the classroom!
