Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in an urban area. The school has an estimated enrollment of about four hundred fifty students for the 2018-2019 school year in grades TK-5. Additionally, we house a state pre-k program. About 97.7% of the students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, and 79.4% are English language learners. The school is a dual language school, so instruction is taught in both English and Spanish.
The students at our school are wonderful children who need a little extra support to reach their goals.
Our school is located in an economically depressed area, and our school district has recently gone through a battery of budget cuts that have left us struggling to meet student needs.
We are on a mission to provide an intellectually stimulating, culturally prosperous, and socio-emotionally supportive environment for every child through collaboration and reflection between the school, parents, and community.
My Project
So many of our students have had prolonged or recurring illnesses this flu season. A lot of the children who come to our school do not have adequate sanitation at home, so it is really imperative that they have the ability to clean their hands properly at school. As a math intervention provider, I work with every student in the school. Children are missing out on learning often because they are sick. Our school district is in a budget crisis, and they are cutting back on supplying basic needs to the school. That is why we are asking for toilet paper, soap, and paper towels. We need our students to be able to use the bathroom in a sanitary way to prevent illness.
Children cannot learn when they are not in school, so we need these items to help keep our student population healthy and present!
Teachers have tried to purchase these items themselves, but the need is too great. Soap, paper towels, and toilet paper are not regularly provided by the school. We need help from the global community to make sure all the students at our school have a safe, healthy learning environment.
