"Does anyone have a pencil sharpener?" I must hear those words fifteen times a day! The pencil sharpener in our room is a manual one that damages students' pencils. With all that we are learning and creating, having a sharpened pencil should be the last thing on our minds!
I teach at a Title 1 school in North Carolina.
My students come from a low socio-economic area and many are facing high poverty levels. They come from diverse backgrounds, and many are non-English speakers. My students are motivated and enjoy learning. They enjoy being challenged, and they look forward to coming to school each day.
My Project
If you asked the students in my class what our biggest need is, they would say it's a pencil sharpener. Students in my class are creating products to show their learning continuously throughout the school day. Often, they have to stop what they are doing and look for a student with a small hand-held pencil sharpener so they can continue with their work. This not only interrupts their own learning, but the learning of the students that are being asked. The manual sharpener that the school provided requires strenuous work with no results. A durable, electric pencil sharpener placed in a central location would be ideal for my students.
I would love nothing more than to take burdens off of my students.
I can't solve all of their problems, but I do what I can. As minor as it may sound, not having a sharpened pencil is something that impedes student learning and can easily be fixed. A durable pencil sharpener can be used for years and students to come. Thank you for your support!
