Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fifth-grade math teacher in a middle school located in the southwest side of the City of Chicago. The student body is approximately 97% percent Hispanic and about 96% percent are classified as low-income students. Some of my students have an Individualized Education Program and some are English Language Learners.
My students come to school every day eager to learn.
They are our future leaders and many of them aspire to become teachers, doctors, lawyers, police officers, nurses, and computer programmers.
My Project
The document camera that I am asking for will allow my students to share their work with their peers. Students will be able to place their notebook/task under the camera and show the entire class their work and explain their mathematical thinking. My students get very excited when they get to share their work and this allows them to develop positive identities as thinkers and learners. If a student is having a hard time understanding a concept they are able to better understand through the explanation of another student. Additionally, having a document camera will allow me to model problems using manipulatives and this can help my visual learners.
I believe it is very important for students to be able to explain their mathematical thinking because this shows they have fully conceptualized the mathematical concepts.
A document camera will allow my students to be able to share their solution to a problem and articulate how and why that is the answer. Having a document camera will generate excitement and engage my students.
